5 Helpful Habits for a Healthier Semester

By: Mehak Dureja, SDSU Chapter Member

Welcome back to school science ladies! I am not sure about you, but the thought of a brand new year sounds so refreshing to me. It is the time of the year when we are allowed to explore ourselves in new ways, create new goals - academic and personal - and truly have a new start. Last year I learned that I needed to work on my self-care. As the semester picks up, I slowly begin to disregard my physical and mental health, which inevitably leads to many embarrassing breakdowns in the library and various other public places. Therefore, I have decided to implement certain habits right off the bat that I think will be useful to achieve academic success in a mentally and physically healthier way. Here is my list of tips and tricks to foster a healthy, success-filled semester!

1. Exercise

I know it sounds redundant, but exercise has been proven to play a major role in academic success. Additionally, it releases endorphins, which triggers a positive feeling in the body enhancing your mental health. ;)

2. Meal prepping

On-campus food can be exhausting and unhealthy when consumed excessively. Meal prepping allows you to save money while also helping you obtain necessary nutrients that are often lacking in campus fast food options. Here are some links to recipes that I love using.

3. Organization

Have a calendar, a planner, or even your reminders app handy at all times. Whether online or on paper, having a place where everything is written down can make upcoming deadlines and exams less overwhelming.

4. Take breaks

I know it sounds like everyone says this and it may not seem like a big deal to just keep going 24/7, but you deserve a break for all the hard work you put it in! If you go long enough without giving yourself a break, eventually you will burn yourself out.

5. Have alone time

Find the time in your week where it is just you, take a deep breath and relax. As STEM majors, we are constantly running around trying to get one thing done after the other. However, we need that alone time to recuperate before we get back on the grind!

Hopefully, these 5 tips will help you have a great start to the semester like they have for me. Here’s to another great year for STEM! Remember to take care of yourself and be confident in your abilities!
